Keep Them Shining: How To Care For Your Glass Baluster Railings

If you've chosen glass baluster railings for your home, you need to plan for proper maintenance. Glass railings increase visibility and lend a unique appearance to any home. One of the great things about glass railings is that they won't rot or rust like wood and metal railings do. Here are some easy-to-follow tips that will keep your glass railings looking brand new.

Keep the Dust and Dirt Away

If your glass railings will be outside, they'll collect a lot of dirt and dust. The accumulation of dirt and dust will make your glass railings lose their shine. Luckily, ordinary dust can be wiped away with a clean cloth. Help your glass railings keep their shine. Wipe them down with a clean cloth at least once a week. If your dry cloth won't do the trick, use a small amount of glass cleaner. Glass cleaner will remove the dirt and grime that a dry cloth leaves behind.

Wipe Away the Water Spots

When most people think of water spots, glassware usually comes to mind. But, water spots can develop on glass baluster railings too. You can't always get outside to dry your railings after a rainstorm or after your sprinklers shut off. That's where the water spots come from. Unfortunately, water spots can leave your glass railings looking less than their best. Luckily, you can remove water spots with water and vinegar. Fill a spray bottle with equal parts distilled water and vinegar. Spray the solution on your railing and allow it to soak in for several minutes. Wipe clean with a soft cloth. You can also use this method to remove streaks.

Clean Off the Bird Droppings

If you've decided on glass railings for your home, be ready to clear away the bird droppings. Birds often come to roost on exterior railings, and they usually leave droppings behind. Once bird droppings dry, they can be difficult to remove. If you end up with dried bird droppings on your glass railings, reach for the warm sudsy water. Fill your spray bottle with warm water. Add a teaspoon of antibacterial dish soap. Saturate the droppings and allow it to set for several minutes. Spray the droppings again and wipe away with a wet cloth.

Restore the Shine

If your glass railings lose their shine, restore the luster. Over time, your glass railings may begin to look dull. Bring back the shine with water and lemon juice. Fill a bucket with warm water. Add two tablespoons of liquid dish soap and ½ cup of lemon juice. Wash your railings with the cleaning solution and buff dry with a clean cloth.

About Me

Energy Bill Increasing? Your Windows May be to Blame

I noticed my energy bill was slowly creeping up higher and higher. The first thing I thought could be the cause of the problem, was my air conditioning and heating system. After a thorough inspection, the repair company said that was in great condition. So I did some research online and found that old windows could be the cause of energy bills increasing. I had no idea that as your windows age and lose efficiency, your energy bill begins to go up. In fact, that is one of the earliest signs that your windows may need to be replaced in the near future. If I didn't know this information, I am sure others didn't as well, so I created this site to educate others. This site includes many signs that indicate your windows need to be replaced, including an increasing energy bill.
